Obtaining[edit]
Wooden, golden, iron and netherite tools can receive up to Efficiency V through the enchantment table. Diamond and stone tools can only receive up to level IV through the enchantment table, but can be given Efficiency V by combining 2 items with Efficiency IV in an anvil. Diamond tools with efficiency V can also be found in end city and bastion remnant chests.
Usage[edit]
The proper tool for a block must be used in order to receive the speed benefit; the enchantment has no effect if the block is mined with the incorrect tool. See Breaking § Speed for details on mining speed.
The speed increase applies to all blocks that drop an item when mined.
Efficiency applied to an axe increases the chance that the axe may stun a shield, with the base chance being 25% and a 5% increase for each level of efficiency.[Java Edition only]
Level | Percentage increase |
---|---|
I | +25% |
II | +30% |
III | +35% |
IV | +40% |
V | +45% |

Java Edition | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1.0.0 | Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3 | Added Efficiency. | |||
1.4.5 | pre | Efficiency is now useless when using tools on the wrong block types as they now break the block at the same rate as the player's bare fists.[1][is this the correct version?] | |||
1.4.6 | 12w50a | Efficiency has been nerfed slightly, so that enchanted tools that do not match the block the player is breaking no longer work as quickly as before (e.g., Efficiency V pickaxes no longer instantly break dirt or logs). | |||
1.16 | 20w10a | Hoes can now be enchanted with Efficiency. | |||

Notes:
How Much Is Minecraft Bedrock Edition
- Tiny/Small/Big Slime categories include their Lava Slime counterparts.
- An XP value like '3.5 (2.0 - 5.0)' indicates that the action randomly provides between 2.0 and 5.0 XP. The number of actions needed is calculated based on the average value (3.5 XP).
- The XP values for smelting are multiplied by the number of items removed from the furnace, then any leftover fraction is awarded at random. For example, if you remove a stack of 8 iron ingots (0.7 XP each), since 0.7 * 8 = 5.6 you will always receive at least 5 XP, and 60% of the time you wil receive an additional 1 XP. (This all averages out, so there is no advantage to smelting in stacks of a particular size.)
